The dog has been with us for centuries. But without humans, would the dog exist at all? It’s an interesting question. Having made our canine companions such an integral part of our societies and cultures, do we have a responsibility for their welfare? If so, how far does that responsibility extend?
A transcript of the main text of Humanity and the Moral Imperative of Dog Training is available at the Life As A Human online magazine website. You can visit Life as a Human to find this and other articles.

I loved this essay! We hear of far too many dogs returned because the “dog was not compatible with me” which sounds like the adopter believed it was the dog’s responsibility to adjust to them. In reality, and as you point out, the responsibility lies on us to have first, made a responsible and informed decision on breed selection and second, committed to training the dog to adapt to our lifestyle and the lifestyle we wish it to now have.
